Arnhem timmert aan de weg als studiestad
Partnerships hogescholen en gemeente ondertekend
De gemeente Arnhem, de Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN) en Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein (VHL) hebben woensdag 13 mei afspraken gemaakt om Arnhem nog nadrukkelijker op de kaart te zetten als studiestad. Met het zetten van een handtekening bekrachtigden burgemeester Herman Kaiser, bestuursvoorzitter Kees Boele van de HAN en diens collega Peter van Dongen van Hogeschool VHL hun voornemens tot nauwere samenwerking.
Convenant met drie hogescholen
Uitgangspunt van de gesloten partnerships is het besef dat onderwijsinstellingen en hun studenten belangrijk zijn voor Arnhem. Ze zorgen immers voor innovatie, werkgelegenheid en dynamiek in de stad. In 2014 sloot de gemeente al een dergelijke partnership met ArtEZ, de hogeschool van de Kunsten. Nu ook met de twee andere hogescholen afspraken zijn gemaakt heeft de gemeente met alle drie de hogescholen in de stad een convenant.
Campusontwikkeling
In de partnershipszijn afspraken gemaakt op verschillende gebieden. Zo wordt gesproken over het zorgen voor voldoende woonruimte voor studenten. De komst van bijna 300 studentenwoningen in het voormalige Rijkswaterstaatkantoor in Presikhaaf is daarvan een goed voorbeeld. Ook de ontwikkeling van een ‘gezamenlijke’ campus staat hoog op de agenda, waarbij onder andere wordt gedacht aan een betere bereikbaarheid ervan. Bijvoorbeeld via een snelfietspad tussen Arnhem en Velp en eventueel het verplaatsen van NS-station Presikhaaf in oostelijke richting. Ook de samenwerking tussen de onderwijsinstellingen en de gemeente zal worden versterkt. Verder wordt er concreet gesproken over een gezamenlijk programma in de binnenstad tijdens de introductieweek van het nieuwe hogeschooljaar.
Basis voor innovatie en creativiteit
Burgemeester Herman Kaiser: ‘De hogescholen zijn voor ons belangrijke partners op alle niveau’s. Zo zijn zij volwaardig deelnemer in de Triple Helix, in de driehoek Arnhem, Nijmegen, Ede-Wageningen en zijn zij van grote betekenis als het gaat om de aansluiting van onderwijs op de arbeidsmarkt. Maar het allerbelangrijkst vind ik dat door de aanwezigheid van de hogescholen in onze stad, jonge mensen alle mogelijkheden hebben om zich te kunnen voorbereiden op hun beroepscarriere. Overigens, juist in de – in Nederland unieke – combinatie van drie hogescholen, ligt de grote kracht. Tussen de instellingen onderling zijn uitdagende crossovers mogelijk. Het zijn die crossovers die aan de basis liggen van innovatie en creativiteit.’
Belangrijke verbinding
Bestuursvoorzitter HAN Kees Boele: ‘De verbinding met de Gemeente Arnhem en de andere onderwijsinstellingen is belangrijk voor de HAN. De HAN biedt hoger onderwijs met een passend profiel aan in de stad. Denk hierbij aan versterking van onderwijs in innovatieve economische sectoren passend bij Arnhem, zoals het cluster Energie en Milieutechnologie, de zakelijke dienstverlening en bijvoorbeeld sport. Daarnaast leveren we als HAN graag onze bijdrage aan maatschappelijke thema’s: studenten van de faculteit Economie & Management die helpen met het invullen van belastingformulieren, Pabo-studenten die ondersteuning kunnen bieden aan mensen die laaggeletterd zijn, studenten Sociale Studies die een rol kunnen spelen bij wijkgerichte dienstverlening. Ook op deze manier willen we betekenisvol voor Arnhem zijn.’
Samenwerken
Voorzitter College van Bestuur Hogeschool VHL Peter van Dongen: ‘Niet veel steden kunnen bogen op een combinatie van onderwijssectoren zoals die in Arnhem te vinden is: een hogeschool voor de kunsten (ArtEZ) een hogeschool binnen het groene domein (Hogeschool VHL) en een multisectorale hogeschool als de HAN. Dat dit tot inspirerende cross-sectorale initiatieven leidt is evident. Hogeschool VHL en de HAN werken bv. in toenemende mate samen als het gaat om ondernemerschap en activiteiten binnen de watersector.
In de samenwerking met ArtEZ zien we volop mogelijkheden op het meer creatieve vlak, bijvoorbeeld met onze opleiding tuin- en landschapsinrichting. Het initiatief om als onderwijsinstellingen de handen ineen te slaan en samen met de gemeente Arnhem een bruisende studentenstad neer te zetten, juichen we van harte toe. Een aantrekkelijk studentenleven, betaalbare studentenwoningen op een internationale campus en een betere bereikbaarheid, maken Hogeschool VHL tot een aantrekkelijke plek om te gaan studeren. Vandaar dat we vandaag met volle overtuiging onze handtekening hebben gezet onder het convenant met de gemeente Arnhem.’
